A reader with a dictionary attached to every word.

Built for serious adult learners reading real material. Self-hosted, dictionary-first, open-source.

WHY THIS EXISTS

Most language-learning tools ask you to curate every word you want to learn. TELA flips that — you read what you want to read, and Wiktionary curates the dictionary side. Every word is tap-to-understand. Vocabulary state evolves as a side-effect of reading, not as a separate gamified exercise.

The project is built around three principles: dictionary depth (homographs stay distinguished, etymology surfaces, register tags matter); reading-first flow (no streaks, no XP, no celebratory popups); and data sovereignty (your texts and vocabulary stay on your hardware).

WHO BUILDS THIS

Made by Max Vollper. Open-source from day one. Hosted instance is currently free during open beta; the same code can be self-hosted via docker compose.
